Janet Olson, DACVIM (Cardiology) of Veterinary Cardiology Specialists in Minneapolis, MN for this great VETgirl guest blog! Here, she discusses the appropriate and inappropriate uses of furosemide, the diuretic (commonly called Lasix in North America). Furosemide is the most common medication used in dogs with confirmed heart failure. Here are some general “DOs and DONʼTs” for Furosemide use. DOs 1) Prior to prescribing furosemide, a renal panel with electrolytes and a urine specific gravity should always be performed. This is necessary to establish a baseline for which to assess renal function and tolerance and response to therapy. 2) Any time the furosemide dose is increased, a renal panel with electrolytes should be performed. This is indicated to ensure continued tolerance to the medication. Used for prompt relief of edema in horses, cattle, dogs and cats associated with cardiac insufficiency and acute noninflammatory tissue edema. Dosage: Administer intramuscularly or intravenously. Cattle- 10 ml (500 mg) once daily or 5 ml (250 mg) twice daily at 12 hour intervals. Horses- 5-10 ml (250-500 mg) once or twice daily at 6 to 8 hour intervals. Dogs and cats- 1/4 to 1/2 ml per 10 lbs body weight given once or twice daily, permitting a 6 to 8 hour interval between treatments. Milk taken from animals during treatment for 48 hours after last treatment may not be used for food. Cattle may not be slaughtered for food within 48 hours following last treatment. Chemical name: 4-chloro-N-furfuryl-5-sulfamoylanthranilic acid. INDICATIONS Dogs, Cats & Horses: Furosemide Injection 5% is an effective diuretic possessing a wide therapeutic range.

This leaflet answers some common questions about Lasix oral medicines (tablets, oral solution) and injections. It does not take the place of talking to your doctor or pharmacist. Your doctor has weighed the risks of you taking this medicine against the benefits they expect it will have for you. Lasix contains furosemide (frusemide), which belongs to a family of drugs called diuretics. If you have any concerns about taking this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist. A diuretic helps reduce the amount of excess fluid in the body by increasing the amount of urine produced. Lasix is used to treat swelling of the ankles, feet, legs or even the brain or lungs. This swelling is called oedema and can occur in some heart, lung, liver or kidney conditions. Lasix may be used in some patients with more serious kidney problems who may have some fluid retention. Lasix may also be used to lower high blood pressure (which is also called hypertension). This pressure helps move your blood around your body. Your blood pressure may vary at different times of the day, depending on how busy or worried you are.

I’m writing this post for all of you out there who have now had more than one miscarriage and want to know what to do and which tests to get. You’re sad and overwhelmed and tired of hearing about how you just had bad luck. I am writing what I wish I had read two miscarriages ago. I have since done tons of research, compared notes with many others going through this, have consulted with several doctors and I am still learning. I tell you this so you are not surprised when it shows up on your paperwork. Your situation is now called “repeat pregnancy loss” or “recurrent pregnancy loss,” or RPL for short. Many doctors will suggest RPL testing after two miscarriages. For some doctors and states, the protocol seems to be after two and for some, it could be three.
